Friday My Town Shoot Out ~ Windows and Doors

I was so looking forward to this weeks theme of windows and doors.  Unfortunately, I have been feeling really low on energy this week and didn't get out much.  The one day I forced myself to get out and take a few shots downtown, the lighting was horrible, and because I haven't learned how to use my camera's other functions yet, I shot in auto mode and the light outside was much too bright.  Following are the few shots I took earlier this week.  I wanted to WOW everyone, but you'll just have to settle for now.

This shot was taken in our neighborhood during our regular evening walk.

Another shot around the neighborhood.

This was taken at the Main Street Hotel and Casino.  They have some beautiful stained glass windows, unfortunately the photographer is still a novice and therefore, the photo does not do the real thing justice.

This is the same window as the one pictured above it, but showcasing just the lower half.

These are the doors that lead inside the casino.

The same picture as in the first stained glass window, but at a different view.

This is a window that sits on the roof of a mormon church.  I'm not sure if it is a faux window or functional window.  This is in my neighborhood.

This is also at the same church.

This is a replica of an ice box that I use as a night stand next to my bed.  I tweaked the photo to hide the dust.  LOL

This is a photo of the door to my jewelry box.  My youngest brother got this for me many years ago.

This is the top of the window in my formal living room by the front door.

These windows are in my formal dining room

This is my next door neighbor's window  Notice the glass bottles she collects.  This is looking from my backyard into her window.

  1. Some of these are quite good, and all are interesting.

You did a good job, learning how to use one's camera is part of the fun - especially when one has a D90!!

  2. even the most famous photographers started as a novice - we have the advantage with digital to see immediately what we've taken so we can take it again and again to try and get it right. SO take more and more photos until you feel 'as one' with your camera. The other day I went into town without the camera, I kept looking down at my hand - like I'd forgotten it (the hand) it felt so empty...

the windows and doors of the casino are great...

  4. Wow! I love the night -- or evening shots -- particularly the first one. And there is one ominous abstract reflection in a window -- the one where you signed it in white at the bottom -- that sends shivers up my retina.

  5. Jarielyn, I think you did a great job with the subject matter. You found interesting scenes. Windows are hard. You have to catch the lighting just right... I've read that Ansel Adams, who is famous for his black & white western scenes, sat for many hours waiting for the light to be just right. I think it will take me ages to know what all my camera can do. I really like the ice box, the jewelry box and your neighbor's window.

  6. If you did this on a low-energy week, I'm not sure I'd want to be around you on a high-energy week! I mean, wow, you found a ton of interesting takes. I like the evening shot with the round window and lit-up room.

  7. Thank God I am not the only one with dust on my nightstand! You could have left it in the picture to make me feel better :)

The round window makes me think of Hobbits!
Love the second shot of the glass door - what a beautiful door.

I'm figuring out the manual side of my Canon through shoot-outs, also. It's a fun way to do it!

  8. Jarielyn, I think we are in the same place with our cameras. I moved out of Auto for the first time last week. Will take GingerV's advise and play and play. I think we are on a wonderful journey!! I love your old ice-box and the top of the window in your formal living room. I'm glad I'm not a gambler or I could be enticed by those doors into the casino.

  9. I love the mystery around doors and windows. What lies behind them? Who's there? Who has been there before them? What are they doing? How have they arranged the room? So many possibilities.

  14. Gal I don't think you need any lessons. Your shots are great. I want to learn to do a close up with a shady background and vise versa.

  15. I have that exact same icebox replica! Funny. Thanks for the heads up with my blog not being accessible. I knew something was wrong but couldn't figure out what to do about it. Seems it fixed itself.
